There is this cry that the body lets out, sometimes, like a shout that cuts through us. Perhaps it is that of a child’s soul searching for its source. When faced with a body that deceives, upsets, and sometimes dishonors, one must identify the ruse at work. To befoul the sun is to exit one’s own self, to return to ecstasy—what Bataille calls “la petite mort” (the little death), that moment of grace that escapes the body. It is this elusive and sacred twisting of oneself that holds the key to being. Do they not say that the night of lovers is to be found in dreams? It must be the dja, their double, which, come nightfall, seeps out of the bodies that slumber. Here, as the spring awakes, bodies sprout and dance. In an act of rebellion, the body dives, quivers, then forgets itself, cast away by the soul. Across three video works, Achref Toumi, Bachir Tayachi, and Myriam Amri and Margaux Fitoussi choreograph waltzes for the soul and the sky. First, there is the circle of adolescent bodies under the sun of Tabarka. La Piscine: an homage to bodies in transformation and hearts in bloom. Further down, a soul leaps into a yawning dream. The Tiger Was Her Keeper: the reverie of a grandmother plunged in sleep. Finally, when the present is no longer, bodies begin to float. Anesthesia: a fleeting fugue of sensations. Befoul the Sun is an exhibition of videos showcasing young Tunisian talent. The exhibition is inspired by and pays tribute to Ahmadou Kourouma’s novel Waiting for the Wild Beasts to Vote (1998).
